History, Ethos and Aims
A Longstanding Tradition of Girls’ Education
The Cavendish School has a long and distinguished history of providing an outstanding education for girls within a warm, inclusive and nurturing environment. As an independent girls’ prep school in Camden, North London, we celebrate the rich diversity of backgrounds, cultures and experiences represented across our pupils, families and staff.
Founded in 1875, The Cavendish School was originally located in Cavendish Square in central London, from which the school takes its name. In 1970, the school moved to its current Camden site and became a charitable trust, continuing its longstanding commitment to excellent teaching, exceptional pastoral care and the development of confident, well-rounded young people.
At the heart of our school community is a strong belief that every child should feel known, valued and supported as an individual. This sense of belonging allows girls to flourish academically, socially and emotionally throughout their time at the school.
Our Founder: Cornelia Connelly
The Cavendish School was founded on the educational vision of the pioneering American educator Cornelia Connelly, whose progressive ideas remain highly relevant today.
At a time when education often relied heavily on rote learning, Cornelia Connelly believed children learned best through encouragement, curiosity and individual care. In 1846, she founded the Society of the Holy Child Jesus in Derby, establishing schools and educational opportunities for mill girls, factory workers and disadvantaged children.
Her philosophy centred on educating the whole child within an environment built on trust, compassion and intellectual ambition. She also established teacher training colleges to promote her belief that education should nurture confidence, independence and character alongside academic achievement.
A Modern Independent Girls’ Prep School in Camden
Today, while no longer affiliated with a religious denomination, The Cavendish School continues to build upon Cornelia Connelly’s forward-thinking educational philosophy.
We remain committed to providing an ambitious and nurturing independent education for girls in Camden, combining academic excellence with exceptional pastoral care, specialist teaching and a broad co-curricular programme. Small class sizes, strong relationships and a rich curriculum enable girls to develop confidence, resilience and a genuine love of learning from an early age.
Situated in the heart of central London, the school also benefits from access to outstanding cultural, educational and sporting opportunities beyond the classroom, enriching the girls’ experience and deepening their understanding of the wider world.
Our Educational Vision – A Place Where Girls Dare
At The Cavendish School, we aim to be a place where girls dare and become spirited, versatile achievers.
Our educational approach encourages girls to become confident lifelong learners who feel secure, supported and inspired to fulfil their potential both academically and personally. We believe girls thrive when they are encouraged to think independently, embrace challenge and develop their own voice within a kind and collaborative community.
A Broad and Enriching Curriculum
Through excellent teaching and a rich curriculum, girls are encouraged to explore a wide range of subjects, interests and experiences across the arts, sciences, humanities, sport and creative disciplines.
We place equal importance on academic achievement, creativity, wellbeing and character development. Our broad educational approach helps girls discover their strengths, develop resilience and grow in confidence while maintaining a genuine enthusiasm for learning.
High-quality literacy and oracy underpin learning throughout the school, helping pupils communicate clearly, think critically and engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
Confidence, Kindness and Community
Community lies at the heart of life at The Cavendish School. We actively encourage kindness, empathy and respect, creating an inclusive environment in which girls support one another and value the contributions of others.
Girls are encouraged to develop independence, resilience and social awareness while building meaningful relationships with their peers, teachers and the wider community. Through this supportive environment, pupils learn to approach challenges with confidence, curiosity and generosity of spirit.
Our aim is that every girl leaves The Cavendish School not only academically prepared for the next stage of her education, but also equipped with the confidence, character and sense of purpose to flourish throughout her life.
