Oracy

Oracy

At The Cavendish School, oracy is a central part of our educational approach and underpins learning across the curriculum. Oracy refers to the ability to communicate effectively through spoken language: expressing ideas clearly, listening thoughtfully and engaging confidently in discussion, debate and presentation. Just as literacy supports reading and writing, and numeracy supports mathematics, oracy plays a vital role in learning, critical thinking and personal development.

Commitment to Give Girls a Voice

We are committed to developing confident, articulate and thoughtful girls who are able to communicate with clarity, curiosity and empathy. From Nursery through to Year 6, pupils are encouraged to express their ideas, ask purposeful questions, think critically and engage respectfully with the views of others. Through discussion, collaboration and debate, girls deepen their understanding and develop the confidence to use their voice effectively in a wide range of contexts.

Life Skills
Oracy skills are explicitly taught throughout the curriculum and embedded across everyday school life. Whether presenting ideas in the classroom, participating in performances, collaborating on projects or contributing to discussions, girls are supported in becoming confident communicators who can speak with independence and conviction.

Communication Skills
Beyond the classroom, a wide range of co-curricular opportunities further strengthens pupils’ communication skills, including drama, debating, performances, LAMDA and public speaking activities. These experiences help girls develop resilience, self-confidence and the ability to communicate effectively with different audiences.

Through our strong focus on oracy, The Cavendish School equips girls with the communication skills they need to thrive not only at senior school, but also in the wider world and future workplace, empowering them to express themselves confidently, thoughtfully and authentically throughout their lives.
